“Signs and Wonders”
Acts 5:12-16
Memory Verse: “ The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people.” – Acts 5:12a
Big Idea: Miracles are God’s work, and he works them to bring glory to himself and to strengthen our faith. When we encounter serious needs in people’s lives today, it is right for us to seek God for an answer, and where miraculous intervention seems to be needed, then to ask God if he would be pleased to work in that way. This would seem to be especially appropriate when our motivation is a Christlike compassion for those in need and a burning desire to see Christ’s kingdom advance and his name glorified.
The Definition of Miracles
“A miracle is a less common kind of God’s activity in which he arouses people’s awe and wonder and bears witness to himself.” (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology)
Sign = semeion
Wonder = teras
Mighty work/Miracle = dynamis
The Purpose of Miracles
Advance the Gospel
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.” (Acts 2:22)
“It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.” (Hebrews 2:3-4)
“The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works.” (2 Corinth. 12:12)
Announce the Kingdom of God
“But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.” (Luke 11:20)
Assist the needy
Attest to God’s Glory
